Fireplace types
Freestanding vs built-in fireplaces: how to choose
Both options burn the same fuel and both can be closed combustion. The difference is how they sit in the room, what they cost to install, and how much building work is involved.

Freestanding fireplaces
A freestanding unit stands on a hearth against or near a wall, with an exposed flue rising to the roof. Because the whole body of the unit radiates heat into the room, it often heats better than an insert of the same rating.
Installation is quicker and cheaper: no chimney breast to build, and in many homes we can complete it in a day. It is also the practical choice if you may move or reposition the unit later.
- Lower installed cost and faster fitting
- Radiates heat from all sides
- Cast iron and steel options in traditional and modern styles
- Needs floor space and a visible flue
Built-in fireplaces and inserts
A built-in sits flush in the wall or an existing opening, so it takes no floor space and gives the cleaner architectural line most designers want. Inserts are also the usual way to upgrade an old open fireplace to closed combustion.
The trade-off is building work: brickwork or a chimney breast, a non-combustible surround, chimney relining and making good afterwards. That adds cost and days on site.
- Flush, built-in look with no floor space used
- Ideal for converting an existing open fireplace
- Needs brickwork, relining and finishing
- Longer installation and higher overall cost
Choosing for your room
For a large open-plan lounge where heat matters most, a freestanding closed combustion unit usually gives the best result per rand. For a formal living room, a renovation with an existing chimney, or a design-led build, a built-in insert is worth the extra work.
Whichever you choose, the flue specification and clearances drive the installation. We confirm both on the site visit before we quote.
