Fireplace comparison
Wood vs gas fireplaces: which is right for your Cape Town home?
Wood or gas is the first decision most homeowners face, and it shapes everything after it: the flue, the position, the running cost and the paperwork. Here is a straight comparison based on what we fit across Cape Town every winter.

Wood burning fireplaces
Nothing matches a real wood fire for atmosphere, and a closed combustion wood unit will heat a large open-plan living area on its own. Wood is also the cheaper fuel in most of the Western Cape if you buy in bulk before winter.
The trade-offs are practical: you need dry storage space, you have to lay and light the fire, and there is ash to clear. The flue must be swept annually.
- Strongest radiant heat for large rooms
- Cheapest fuel when bought seasoned and in bulk
- Needs wood storage, lighting time and ash removal
- Requires a correctly sized insulated flue and yearly sweeping
Gas fireplaces
Gas gives you instant heat at the turn of a knob, no mess and precise control. It suits apartments, smaller lounges, holiday homes and anyone who wants warmth without preparation. Modern balanced-flue units can go on outside walls where a chimney is impossible.
Every LP gas installation in South Africa must be done by a registered installer and signed off with a certificate of conformity. Our team issues that certificate on completion, which your insurer will ask for.
- Instant on and off with adjustable heat
- No wood storage, ash or soot
- Balanced flue options for walls without a chimney
- Certificate of conformity issued on completion
Running cost and heat output
Per hour of heat, seasoned wood is usually cheaper than LP gas in the Western Cape, but gas wastes nothing when you only want an hour of warmth. If you light a fire most winter evenings, wood tends to win. If you want heat occasionally and quickly, gas does.
Heat output also depends on the room. A double-volume lounge in Durbanville generally needs a closed combustion wood unit; a compact Sea Point apartment is better served by a gas unit sized to the space.
